Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouthi Reportedly Assaulted in Israeli Prison

RAMALLAH: Marwan Barghouthi, a prominent Palestinian political figure and Secretary of the Fatah movement in the West Bank, was reportedly subjected to brutal assaults along with fellow prisoners in Megiddo Prison, according to statements released by Palestinian groups. The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and the Prisoners Society announced that Barghouthi and several of his comrades suffered significant injuries in attacks that occurred last September.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the society’s lawyer confirmed the injuries after numerous attempts to visit Barghouthi, citing wounds to his head, ears, ribs, and limbs. The commission has described these assaults as a deliberate attempt to eliminate key leaders of the jailed movement, highlighting Barghouthi’s history of facing multiple attacks while imprisoned. The statement further alleged that Israeli prison authorities isolate prisoner leaders under harsh conditions, subjecting them to repeated assaults.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees has
documented numerous incidents of torture, starvation, and inadequate medical care, which have reportedly intensified since the onset of regional conflict. The commission’s statement emphasized that the conditions in Israeli prisons reflect ongoing crimes against Palestinians, with numerous deaths reported and only 41 identities officially recognized.

Marwan Barghouthi, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, has been detained since 2002 and is serving five life sentences plus an additional 40 years.
