Parliamentary Committees Delay Amnesty Law Session Due to Tensions

Beirut: Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab on Wednesday suspended a joint parliamentary committees session on the general amnesty law minutes after it began, citing tensions that erupted during the previous session and spread beyond parliament onto social media.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Bou Saab emphasized that the sensitive law requires consensus rather than voting, warning that escalating divisions inside and outside parliament could jeopardize its passage. He stressed that the Lebanese army had never acted on a sectarian basis and remains committed to all Lebanese.

He announced that discussions would resume on Monday after further consultations by a smaller committee tasked with resolving the remaining disputed points. Bou Saab expressed hope that the law could help preserve civil peace and ease tensions.
