PepsiCo and SMLC Bolster Humanitarian Efforts in Lebanon Amid Crisis

Beirut: Amid the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Lebanon, PepsiCo Middle East, along with its local bottling partner Soci©t© Moderne Libanaise pour le Commerce (SMLC), are making significant contributions to relief efforts. They are collaborating with local and international partners to provide vital assistance to people displaced by the conflict and affected by recent events.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Ministry of Social Affairs of Lebanon reports that displacement has reached over 1.2 million people since early March, including approximately 300,000 children. Many of these families are seeking refuge in overcrowded schools, sports stadiums, and shelters, often facing challenges in accessing food, clean water, and essential services.

In response to the urgent needs, PepsiCo Middle East and SMLC are committing around USD 1 million to humanitarian response efforts. These efforts are delivered through trusted organizations such as the Lebanese Red Cross, Children's Cancer Center of Lebanon, Lebanese Food Bank, and the International Rescue Committee. The funds are allocated to supply emergency medical supplies, shelter aid, food assistance, hygiene kits, and other essential relief services.

Hussein Sannouh, SMLC Executive General Manager, emphasized the escalating needs on the ground, especially for families who have lost access to stable shelter and basic services. The focus is on collaborating with local partners to deliver necessary support swiftly.

Partners involved in the response are intensifying their efforts as the situation evolves, concentrating on immediate relief and maintaining essential services. Georges Kettaneh, Lebanese Red Cross Secretary General, expressed gratitude for PepsiCo's initiative, which will aid in providing cash assistance to approximately 1,000 individuals for a month and in rehabilitating one center and repairing damaged ambulances.

Wael Ismail, VP of Corporate Affairs for MENAPAK, acknowledged the severe challenges faced by Lebanese communities, stressing the long-standing presence and consistent humanitarian efforts of the company in the region over the past 75 years. The current focus remains on supporting those leading the response to ensure assistance reaches people with dignity.

International partners have also highlighted the increasing pressure on communities and essential services. Magda Rossman, Country Director for the IRC in Lebanon, pointed out the survival struggles of families forced to flee and the strain on essential services like healthcare, protection, and education. Support from private sector partners, she noted, is crucial for effective emergency response.

PepsiCo Middle East and SMLC are committed to continuing their engagement with partners to address the evolving humanitarian needs and support affected communities across the region.
