President Aoun and Italian FM Tajani Discuss Israeli Attacks and Washington Talks Preparation

Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, engaged in discussions with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani at Baabda Palace regarding Israeli attacks and the upcoming Washington talks. Lebanon hopes for an agreement on a ceasefire during the anticipated discussions between the ambassadors of Lebanon, the United States, and Israel, aiming to initiate direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel to stabilize southern Lebanon.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun expressed that a sustainable solution requires Israel to heed Lebanese, Arab, and international calls to cease attacks and begin negotiations. He emphasized that Israel's destruction of Lebanese areas and institutions is not a viable solution and that diplomatic efforts are preferable for resolving armed conflicts.

The meeting, attended by Lebanon's Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji and Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Fabrizio Marcelli, highlighted Lebanon's sovereignty in handling negotiations with Israel. Aoun also mentioned Lebanon's security measures to prevent arms smuggling and illegal fund flows, aiming to maintain security and financial stability.

Aoun further addressed the social challenges caused by Israel's actions, such as the displacement of southern citizens, and acknowledged Lebanon's need for international support, including from Italy. He expressed gratitude for Italy's ongoing assistance and the role of the Italian contingent in UNIFIL, acknowledging their sacrifices.

Foreign Minister Tajani reiterated Italy's solidarity with Lebanon, emphasizing support for Lebanese institutions and strengthening the Lebanese army. He conveyed Italy's readiness to host future negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, underlining the importance of the Washington talks in achieving a ceasefire.

Tajani condemned Hezbollah's attacks on Israel and expressed confidence in the Lebanese Armed Forces. He called on Israel to cease civilian attacks in Lebanon and against Italian UNIFIL soldiers, while also urging Iran to influence Hezbollah to halt rocket launches toward Israel.

The Italian Foreign Minister emphasized Italy's commitment to peace and dialogue between Israel and Lebanon, expressing optimism about the negotiations' potential positive outcomes. Tajani also addressed questions on various geopolitical issues, reinforcing Italy's stance on territorial integrity and diplomatic solutions.

Tajani concluded by reaffirming Italy's support for Lebanon, hoping for an end to Lebanon's suffering, and expressing readiness to assist in achieving peace and stability in the region.
