Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, conveyed Lebanon's gratitude for the support offered by French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting with French Minister Delegate for the Armed Forces, Alice Rufo, held at Baabda Palace. The meeting was attended by French Ambassador to Lebanon, Herv© Magro, and other delegates. President Aoun expressed Lebanon's appreciation for France's assistance in confronting the ongoing Israeli escalation against Lebanese territory, aiming to achieve a ceasefire and initiate negotiations based on a negotiation initiative announced by President Aoun recently.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun emphasized the futility of war and its repercussions on the Lebanese people, advocating negotiation as the only viable solution for restoring regional security and stability. He highlighted the humanitarian crisis resulting from Israel's continuous shelling, which has displaced over a million citizens and necessitated international cooperation, with France being a primary partner in addressing these challenges.
The President briefed Minister Rufo on Lebanon's responsive measures to the evolving situation, stressing Israel's reluctance to engage in negotiations that would uphold Lebanon's sovereignty over its southern territories. He noted the expression of willingness by European and non-European nations to maintain forces in southern Lebanon following the UNIFIL withdrawal by 2027, which would aid the Lebanese army once it is adequately equipped.
President Aoun also extended his gratitude to France for its comprehensive support, including the delivery of military vehicles and equipment to Beirut Port, enhancing the capabilities of the Lebanese army. Minister Rufo conveyed President Macron's support for President Aoun and Lebanon, affirming France's backing for the Lebanese negotiation initiative and government decisions.
