Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, emphasized the significance of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate renewal during a meeting with UK Defence Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa, Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren. Aoun expressed that the extension of UNIFIL's mandate is crucial for maintaining stability and security along Lebanon's southern border. He highlighted Lebanon's reliance on the support of UN Security Council member states, including the United Kingdom, to ensure a timely extension without obstacles.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the meeting took place at Baabda Palace, with British Ambassador to Lebanon Hamish Cowell also in attendance. President Aoun underscored that UNIFIL's presence south of the Litani River aids in the implementation of UN Resolution 1701. He noted the ongoing coordination between the Lebanese Army and the international force based on the relevant international resolutions.
Aoun addressed the issue of Israel's occupation of the five hills and surrounding areas, which he stated hinders the full deployment of the Lebanese army to the southern border. He affirmed that where the Lebanese army has been deployed south of the Litani River, the state's decision on the exclusivity of arms has been enforced, and armed manifestations have been removed.
The discussions between President Aoun and Vice Admiral Ahlgren also covered current regional developments, the post-ceasefire situation between Iran and Israel, and the conditions in southern Lebanon and along the Lebanese-Syrian border.
