Sharjah: H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the new headquarters of the Poetry House in the Heart of Sharjah area on Wednesday. The event marked a significant cultural milestone, attended by poets, writers, and media professionals. According to Emirates News Agency, the ceremony began with the unveiling of a memorial plaque by the Sharjah Ruler, who also delivered a comprehensive speech on the historical and cultural importance of poetry in Arab society. He traced the origins of poetry back to the era of tribal gatherings in Mecca and the Nabataeans, emphasizing its role in communication and knowledge dissemination. During his address, Sheikh Sultan provided a detailed review of the historical contexts that have shaped modern Arabic poetry. He highlighted the evolution of poetic forms and its integration into the societal fabric over centuries, reflecting on the Nabataeans' use of poetry as a form of media. The inauguration signifi es the beginning of a new phase for the Poetry House, aiming to enhance the literary scene through various activities and events. Sheikh Sultan praised the efforts of the Al Qawafi Cultural Magazine Competition in promoting excellence in poetry and stressed the importance of maintaining integrity and impartiality in the poem selection process. The new Poetry House features state-of-the-art facilities and multiple halls, designed to be a central hub for poets and literary figures. It aims to support and promote Arabic poetry through events such as poetry evenings, cultural festivals, and workshops, and is committed to nurturing new talent and publishing poetic works. The event also included poetic recitations by Emirati poets, showcasing the emotional and artistic depth of Arabic poetry. With this new establishment, the Poetry House continues to uphold its reputation as a leading cultural institution in the Arab world, contributing to the preservation and evolution of Arabic literary heritage.
