Shtayyeh inaugurates novelist activist Emil Habibi Street in Ramallah

Today, Saturday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh inaugurated Emil Habibi Street in the Al-Masyoun neighborhood near Mahmoud Darwish Square in Ramallah, in the presence of Mayor Issa Kassis, the family of the activist and novelist Emile Habibi, and a number of national figures.

The Prime Minister said during the inauguration ceremony of the street, “Emil Habibi was not only a writer and novelist, but he is also a journalist and activist who paved the way for preserving the national identity of our people in the 1948 territories, after the occupation wanted to sweep away the Palestinian national identity.

He added: “I was one of those who knew and read Emile Habibi, from Laka’ Ibn Laka’ to Al-Mutasha’il to Emile Habibi’s weekly under the name Juhayna in Al-Ittihad newspaper, to all of this scene, which is an integral part of awareness, dissemination and strengthening of the Arabic language in light of the Hebrewization and Judaization of the language. We are indebted to To Emil and to all the fighters, martyrs and prisoners.”

He continued: "We do not have a memorial to the Unknown Soldier. We know the names of the four martyrs, and the names of the wounded, the prisoners, their families, and their children. When we honor Emil Habibi, we honor one of the flags of Palestine who entered history through many portals of literature, culture, struggle, and preserving the national dimension of our people in the 1948 lands." .

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to the municipality of Ramallah for this distinguished scene that bridged the distance between Mahmoud Darwish, Khalil Al-Wazir, and Emil Habibi, this complex with its national, geographic, and struggle dimensions.

It is noteworthy that Emil Habibi (1922 Haifa - 1996 Nazareth) was a fighter and politician, one of the founders of the National Liberation League, and one of the most important Palestinian novelists who remained in their land after the Nakba, and who raised the status of Arabic literature globally. He was awarded the Jerusalem Medal for Culture, Arts and Literature from the Palestine Liberation Organization, and had “Remaining in Haifa” written on his tombstone
