Study Reveals High Comorbidity of Autism and ADHD in Spanish School Children

Tarragona: A groundbreaking study conducted in Tarragona, Spain has found that approximately 3% of school children exhibit symptoms of both autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with a smaller fraction, about 0.5%, potentially qualifying for a diagnosis of both conditions. According to Oman News Agency, the research, spearheaded by Josefa Canals and detailed in the journal *Autism Research*, involved the analysis of behavioral data from over 3,700 children. The findings were based on reports from both parents and teachers, providing a robust overview of the prevalence of these neurodevelopmental disorders among young students. The study further highlights that among children already diagnosed with autism, 33% also display symptoms characteristic of ADHD. Conversely, 10% of children known to have ADHD exhibit traits associated with autism. This high rate of overlap between the two conditions suggests a significant need for integrated diagnostic and treatment approaches. Moreover, the r esearch noted a disparity between genders, with comorbidity rates ranging from 4-5% in boys and 1-2% in girls.
