Tarragona: A groundbreaking study conducted in Tarragona, Spain has found that approximately 3% of school children exhibit symptoms of both autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with a smaller fraction, about 0.5%, potentially qualifying for a diagnosis of both conditions. According to Oman News Agency, the research, spearheaded by Josefa Canals and detailed in the journal *Autism Research*, involved the analysis of behavioral data from over 3,700 children. The findings were based on reports from both parents and teachers, providing a robust overview of the prevalence of these neurodevelopmental disorders among young students. The study further highlights that among children already diagnosed with autism, 33% also display symptoms characteristic of ADHD. Conversely, 10% of children known to have ADHD exhibit traits associated with autism. This high rate of overlap between the two conditions suggests a significant need for integrated diagnostic and treatment approaches. Moreover, the r esearch noted a disparity between genders, with comorbidity rates ranging from 4-5% in boys and 1-2% in girls. This gender difference underscores the importance of tailored screening and intervention strategies that address these variations. The researchers advocate for enhanced early screening processes in both school and home environments. By improving early detection of these conditions, there is potential for earlier intervention, which can greatly benefit the development and education of affected children.
