Beirut: Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch Ignatius Joseph III Younan on Monday praised President of the Republic Joseph Aoun's recent visit to Washington, saying the Lebanese head of state had been "the best representative" of Lebanon and had demonstrated to "the world's most powerful country" that Lebanon deserves to live in dignity.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Younan expressed his congratulations to the president on the outcome of his discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and extended his support for Aoun's national positions and efforts to strengthen state authority. Younan emphasized that the president's belief in Lebanon's rights and sovereignty illustrates the country's significance as a beacon in the region.
During their meeting at the presidential palace in Baabda, Aoun briefed the patriarch on his ongoing efforts to consolidate state authority across all Lebanese territory. In response, Younan shared insights into the situation of Syriac Catholics in Lebanon, Iraq, and the diaspora.
On a separate note, Aoun engaged with Tourism Minister Laura Khazen Lahoud, who informed him about the preparations for the upcoming visit of the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nowais. Discussions also covered plans to initiate the tender process for managing, operating, and investing in the Jeita Grotto.
The president also conferred with MP Ibrahim Kanaan, who expressed his support for Aoun's Washington visit, highlighting its role in reinforcing Lebanon's core principles of sovereignty, state institutions, and military strength. Kanaan and Aoun also reviewed the progress of financial reforms being deliberated in parliament, particularly the legislation concerning banking sector reforms.
Later, Aoun met with MP Haidar Nasser, who echoed positive sentiments regarding the Washington visit. He also welcomed a delegation representing the Baalbek-Hermel tribes, who brought up regional development and employment needs alongside security issues. Aoun reassured the delegation of the state's commitment to addressing these concerns and supporting the region's development.
