Ain el-tineh: U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein expressed significant concern over the ongoing crisis in Lebanon following his meeting with Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri on Monday. Highlighting the severe impact of unresolved conflicts, Hochstein called for immediate and full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to stabilize the region.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Hochstein detailed the dire situation in Lebanon, which has worsened due to prolonged conflict and political instability. “After long months of conflict, we have not been able to resolve it, and I feel sorrow for Lebanon’s suffering,” Hochstein commented during his discussions. He emphasized that the future of Lebanon should not be tied to ongoing conflicts, which negatively affect the Lebanese people.
Hochstein attributed the exacerbation of the crisis to the lack of full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, established following the 2006 war, which mandates a ceasefire and sets out necessary se
curity measures in Lebanon. “We are committed to resolving the conflict in Lebanon in accordance with Resolution 1701,” Hochstein affirmed, adding that the mere commitment to the resolution is insufficient without active support for Lebanon’s government. He reassured that Washington is committed to providing necessary assistance to ensure stability.
The U.S. envoy also underscored the international community’s dedication to reconstruction efforts and support for the Lebanese Armed Forces. He clarified his stance on discussions about amending the resolution stating, “I will not engage in discussions about amending Resolution 1701, but rather about the possibility of its full implementation.”
In conclusion, Hochstein conveyed that President Joe Biden’s administration is focused on ensuring that this conflict is the last Lebanon will face for generations, aiming for a long-term peace and stability in the region.
