Washington: The United States has introduced a National Security Memorandum aimed at mitigating the national security risks associated with artificial intelligence, following an executive order issued by President Joe Biden last year. This initiative seeks to balance leveraging AI to counteract military threats from adversaries, such as China, while establishing safeguards to maintain public trust. According to Kuwait News Agency, the memorandum outlines strategies to use advanced AI technologies within national security agencies, while prohibiting applications that could infringe upon civil rights or automate nuclear weapon deployment. The framework also emphasizes enhancing AI research and securing the nation's computer chip supply chain. Intelligence agencies are directed to focus on protecting American industry from foreign espionage. Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, highlighted concerns regarding China's use of AI to suppress populations, disseminate misinformation, and comprom ise the security of the U.S. and its allies. Speaking at an event at the National Defense University, Sullivan stated that the new directive aims to address these concerns and provide alternatives to developing economies worldwide. "This is our nation's first-ever strategy for harnessing the power and managing the risks of AI to advance our national security," Sullivan remarked. He noted that unlike past government-led innovations like space exploration and the internet, AI development has been driven by the private sector. Sullivan emphasized that AI is set to transform the national security landscape, with current applications enhancing logistics, cyber defenses, and intelligence analysis. As AI technology evolves, further applications are anticipated.
