DUBAI: The "UAE Aviation Safety Conference 2024" concluded today in Dubai, organized by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) under the theme "Safety: The Constant in a Changing Industry." The event gathered 24 expert speakers from various sectors of aviation safety, including government agencies, airlines, and academic and research institutions, to discuss a broad range of critical topics such as Wake Turbulence, Safety Management Systems (SMS), Fatigue Management, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). According to Emirates News Agency, the conference, as part of the UAE State Safety Program's (SSP) Safety Promotion initiative, has been a platform for presenting innovative solutions and discussing the evolving challenges in aviation safety. The SMS panel highlighted the latest advancements in proactive safety oversight and the integration of data-driven decision-making processes. Experts underscored the importance of evolving safety management frameworks to enhance risk management and safety reporting syst ems across the aviation industry. The Fatigue Management Panel delved into the critical issue of fatigue among aviation personnel, proposing innovative strategies beyond traditional duty time limitations to mitigate fatigue risks. The discussion included insights on implementing data-driven strategies and real-world case studies that help understand and manage fatigue in various operational sectors such as flight operations, air traffic control, and maintenance. Furthermore, the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) panel focused on the integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft and vertiports into existing airspace systems. This session covered the regulatory, infrastructure, and technological challenges in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of AAM systems. The UAE's proactive approach in adopting these emerging technologies was also highlighted, showcasing its leadership in setting global aviation safety standards. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasized the continuous priority of enhancing safety management efficiency in aviation operations. "The UAE is committed to developing its safety management capabilities to keep pace with global changes and anticipate potential risks," Al Suwaidi stated. He affirmed that the UAE's ongoing commitment to the development of the State Safety Program has established its leadership in regional and global aviation safety. Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at the GCAA, in his opening speech, pointed out the complexities added by rapid technological advancements to safety management. He highlighted the national efforts to adopt the best technological and operational solutions to ensure the sector's safety. The conference also served as a platform for recognizing the achievements in the field of aviation safety, including the honoring of winners of the Safety Marathon award, aimed at enhancing efforts to meet the sustainable development needs of the national aviation infrastructure. Addi tionally, new protocols and workshops were introduced, focusing on communicable disease management in aviation and strategies to prevent runway and taxiway incursions.
