Brussels: H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Finance, spearheaded the UAE's delegation at the inaugural GCC-European Union Summit, underscoring a significant stride in international relations and cooperative development strategies. According to Emirates News Agency, the summit, which is the first at the level of heads of state and government between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU), focused on enhancing cooperation and tackling mutual challenges. Sheikh Maktoum emphasized the summit as a pivotal platform for constructive dialogue that furthers mutual development and addresses global issues such as green transformation and clean energy. "We are committed to strengthening our strategic partnership with the European Union to enhance productive collaboration across key sectors," Sheikh Maktoum stated. He highlighted the UAE's firm belief in international cooperation and its vital role in drivin g sustainable global development. The summit also resonated with the aspirations of GCC countries, reinforcing their commitment to global dialogue and cooperation. Sheikh Maktoum reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to broadening the GCC-European partnership under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. Further, H.H. welcomed initiatives aimed at enhancing trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges with the European Union and acknowledged the EU's crucial role in addressing regional and global challenges. The summit also saw participation from other key figures including His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar; Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC; Charles Michel, President of the European Council; and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The summit was not only a venue for high-level discussions but also serve d as a testament to the strong ties between the UAE and EU, encompassing areas such as trade, investment, tourism, and sustainable development. In 2023, the EU stood as the second-largest trading partner of the GCC, with total trade valued at £170 billion, highlighting the significant economic connections between the two regions.
