UK Pledges $1.3 Million in Medical Aid for Gaza Evacuees

LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced a contribution of USD 1.3 million to the Egyptian Ministry of Health aimed at providing essential medical treatment for civilians evacuated from the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. This funding comes in response to the escalating needs of those affected by the conflict in Gaza, offering support for life-saving medical services across the border in Egypt. According to Kuwait News Agency, the aid package will facilitate the procurement of vital medical supplies and medications through the World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt. These supplies include chemotherapy and rehabilitative equipment, crucial for treating patients with chronic diseases from Gaza. The initiative also aims to enhance the capacity of Egyptian health facilities to manage the influx of patients requiring specialized medical care. The announcement was made by Hamish Falconer, Minister for the Middle East, during his two-day visit to Egypt, which began on Tuesday. Falconer's itine rary included a visit to Al-Arish, where he engaged with local officials and inspected facilities that will benefit from the UK's funding. This includes the Egyptian Red Crescent's warehouse and the Al-Arish General Hospital. During his visit, Falconer expressed concern over the restrictions on aid entering Gaza, especially as the region approaches winter. "At Al Arish, I saw that many tonnes of lifesaving aid continue to be denied entry into Gaza by Israel. As winter approaches, Israel can and must do more to ensure aid flows freely into Gaza and to facilitate the UN and humanitarian agencies to carry out their work safely," he stated. Furthermore, Falconer met with Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. He praised Egypt's pivotal role in mediating aid flows into Gaza and its broader contributions to stability and security in the Middle East. In addition to addressing immediate medical needs, Falconer also signed a landmark UK-Egypt Memorandum of Understanding on Food Security with Egyptian officials, including Rania Al Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, and Alaa Farouk. This agreement focuses on technical assistance to enhance sustainable agribusiness practices and increase crop yields in Egypt, marking a significant step in bilateral cooperation on global food security challenges.
