Beirut: The British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, the US Ambassador, Michel Issa, and the Canadian Ambassador, Gregory Galligan, convened with the Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), General Rudolf Haykal, during the High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC) meeting today. The meeting aimed to address the progress and challenges faced in securing Lebanon’s eastern and northern borders, while reaffirming international support for the LAF’s efforts to reinforce state authority at this critical juncture.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the UK has been a steadfast supporter of the LAF’s Land Border Regiments since 2013. This support has included the construction of 84 operating bases along the border with Syria, with six additional bases constructed since January 2025. Alongside providing training and equipment, these efforts assist the LAF in guarding Lebanon’s eastern and northern borders against smuggling and other illegal activities.
During the meeting, Ambassador Cowell emphasized the UK’s continued support for the LAF’s crucial role in maintaining security and stability, particularly in South Lebanon. He applauded the progress toward achieving state monopoly of arms, a vital step towards a stable and secure Lebanon.
Following the discussions, Ambassador Cowell expressed his appreciation for the LAF’s professionalism and resilience in safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty amid challenging circumstances. He reiterated the commitment to continue working closely with US and Canadian partners, as well as the broader international community, to further strengthen Lebanon’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
