UN Chief Expresses Deep Concern Over Israeli Laws Affecting UNRWA’s Operations.

Jerusalem: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed significant concern regarding the recent passage of two Israeli laws related to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Guterres highlighted that the implementation of these laws could severely hinder UNRWA's ability to carry out its essential mission in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as mandated by the UN General Assembly. According to National news agency - Lebanon, Guterres stressed that UNRWA is the primary provider of essential assistance to Palestine refugees in the region, and there is no substitute for its services. He warned that the enactment of these laws could have dire consequences for Palestine refugees, which he deemed unacceptable. The Secretary-General urged Israel to adhere to its international obligations, including those set forth in the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, emphasizing that national legislation cannot overr ide these commitments. Guterres further stated that the implementation of the laws could negatively impact efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and undermine peace and security in the region. He reiterated the indispensable role of UNRWA in maintaining stability and providing necessary aid. The Secretary-General announced his intention to bring the issue to the attention of the UN General Assembly and promised to keep the Assembly informed about the evolving situation.
