Israeli Parliament’s Vote Against UNRWA Sparks Concerns Over Palestinian Refugee Status.

Jerusalem: The Israeli Parliament's (Knesset) recent decision to vote against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has ignited significant concerns over the implications for Palestinian refugees. Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, assured that despite the vote and the potential termination of UNRWA services, Palestinians will retain their refugee status. He emphasized that this status is safeguarded by a UN General Assembly resolution until a fair resolution is reached for the Palestinian cause. According to Jordan News Agency, Lazzarini described the Knesset's vote as unprecedented and a dangerous precedent. He argued that the decision directly contravenes the UN Charter and violates Israel's obligations under international law. The move is seen as part of a broader campaign to undermine UNRWA and delegitimize its role in delivering essential human-development assistance and services to Palestine refugees. Lazzarini warned of the severe impact these legislative actions could have on Palestinian communities, particularly in Gaza, where residents have been enduring severe hardships. He highlighted the potential deprivation faced by over 650,000 children in Gaza who could lose access to education, thereby risking the future of an entire generation. The UNRWA chief condemned the bills as acts of collective punishment that exacerbate the suffering of the Palestinian people. He further cautioned that failing to counter these legislative efforts could weaken the multilateral mechanisms established post-World War II, which should be a matter of global concern. Lazzarini concluded his statement by urging for international intervention to uphold the established international frameworks that protect the rights and welfare of Palestinian refugees.
