UN Expert on Foreign Debt and Human Rights to Visit Kuwait


Kuwait city: The Independent Expert on foreign debt and human rights, Attiya Waris, is set to visit Kuwait from 1 to 8 October 2025, following an invitation from the Government. Waris will focus on evaluating the impact of foreign debt and related international financial obligations on the enjoyment of human rights, with particular attention to economic, social, and cultural rights.



According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Waris’s agenda includes examining the role of Islamic finance in poverty alleviation, illicit financial flows, fiscal affairs, development assistance, and debt management, and their implications for human rights. During her visit, Waris will engage with various stakeholders, including government ministries, local authorities, state institutions, civil society representatives, private sector actors, and academics in Kuwait City and other locations.



A press conference is scheduled for 8 October at 04:00 pm local time at the United Nations House in Mishref, where the Independent Expert will present her preliminary findings and recommendations. Access to this event will be restricted to journalists. Waris is expected to submit a detailed report of her visit to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026.
