UN Special Envoy Urges Action on Syrian Detention Facility Atrocities

BEIRUT: The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, has issued a compelling statement urging immediate international intervention and support for families affected by the brutal conditions in Syrian detention facilities. Citing harrowing images from Sednaya and other detention centers, Mr. Pedersen highlighted the grave human rights violations and underscored the urgent need for justice and accountability. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Mr. Pedersen emphasized that the documented evidence and survivor testimonies only begin to reveal the depth of suffering endured by detainees. He called for a concerted effort to provide urgent support, including medical care, psychological assistance, legal aid, and safe shelter for the families of those detained, missing, or recently released. He stressed the necessity of securing detention sites, mass graves, and related documentation to aid families in their pursuit of justice. The Special Envoy insisted on prioritizing the accounting for missing persons and ensuring families receive the recognition they need. Mr. Pedersen called for preserving evidence of atrocities to facilitate accountability under international humanitarian law, asserting that justice for victims and their families is essential for healing and preventing further violations. Additionally, Mr. Pedersen urged all parties and relevant organizations to address the humanitarian needs of those recently freed and the families still searching for their loved ones. He called for granting independent monitors full access and complying with international law obligations. He highlighted the plight of countless individuals, including children, women, and men, arbitrarily detained under various authorities, demanding their immediate release. Mr. Pedersen appealed for cooperation with UN specialized bodies and other relevant international and national organizations tackling these issues. He concluded by asserting that the global community owes it to the Syrian people to listen, act, and work tirelessly towards ensuring such atrocities do not occur again.
