GENEVA: The United Nations Human Rights Chief, Volker Trk, has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating crisis in Gaza, describing the current situation in the northern part of the Strip as the darkest moment yet in the ongoing conflict. Trk emphasized that the Israeli military's actions have placed the entire population under severe threat, with continued bombings, a siege, and the risk of starvation, forcing civilians to choose between displacement and remaining trapped in a conflict zone. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Trk called upon global leaders to fulfill their responsibilities under the Geneva Conventions, which mandate respect for international humanitarian law. He highlighted the relentless nature of the bombing in North Gaza, pointing out that the Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations without guarantees of return. The situation is further exacerbated by reports of civilians being shot at while attempting to flee and families being separated or detained. Trk's stateme nt also addressed the ongoing activities of Palestinian armed groups, which continue to operate among civilians and in shelters, placing non-combatants at risk. He condemned these actions as unacceptable, noting the severe limitations on humanitarian access to the region. With aid deliveries effectively halted, starvation looms as a dire threat for many. The UN official reported that hospitals have been targeted, resulting in casualties among both patients and medical staff, and shelters have been repeatedly struck. Communication with the outside world remains severely restricted, and journalists have been killed in the conflict. Trk expressed grave concern over the high number of casualties, with over 150,000 people reportedly dead, wounded, or missing in Gaza. Emphasizing the obligations of international law, Trk noted the International Court of Justice has issued binding orders for Israel to facilitate the entry and delivery of humanitarian aid, in accordance with the Genocide Convention. He called for i mmediate action from states to prevent further violations and to support the protection of civilians. Trk concluded by urging world leaders to act decisively to halt the violence, secure the release of hostages, and uphold international humanitarian and human rights laws. He stressed the importance of maintaining the international rule of law and called for a united global response to protect civilians and uphold fundamental human rights.
