Sakharov Prize Honors Venezuelan Leaders Machado and Gonzalez

Brussels: The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to two prominent Venezuelan figures, Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. This recognition underscores their enduring commitment to restoring democracy and freedom in Venezuela, as announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. According to Kuwait News Agency, the European Parliament highlighted Machado's leadership among Venezuela's democratic forces and acknowledged Gonzalez as the elected president. President Metsola emphasized their brave struggle against oppressive forces in the country, affirming the Parliament's solidarity with the Venezuelan people and these leaders in their quest for a democratic future. Machado, a former Deputy of Venezuela's National Assembly, was chosen as the presidential candidate for the "Unity Democratic Platform" in 2023. However, she faced disqualification by the government-controlled National Electoral Council. Gonzalez, who succeeded Machado as the candi date, contested President Nicolas Maduro's claimed victory and was forced to leave Venezuela following an arrest warrant in September. The award, named after Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov, is the EU's highest human rights accolade. Established in 1988, the prize is bestowed annually to honor individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the defense of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The ceremony is scheduled for December 18 in Strasbourg, during the Parliament's plenary session.
