BRUSSELS: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has voiced concerns regarding the intensifying military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, warning that it may lead to heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. In a recent phone call with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, von der Leyen described North Korea's increasing provision of "lethal" support to Russia as a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and a threat to global peace. According to Kuwait News Agency, von der Leyen assured President Yoon that the European Union's response would focus on collaboration with South Korea and other aligned partners. She commended the advancements made in the security and defense partnership that was announced during the EU-South Korea summit in May 2023, held in Seoul. Von der Leyen emphasized that this partnership highlights the interconnected security concerns of Europe and East Asia, reinforcing the EU and South Korea's mutual dedication to fostering peace and stabili ty in both regions. She also remarked on the timeliness of this partnership, noting its increased relevance as North Korean troops are deployed to support Russia's military efforts in Ukraine for the first time.
