Lebanon to File Complaint with UN Security Council Over Israeli Targeting of Army.

Beirut: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon has directed the country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to lodge a complaint with the UN Security Council. This action comes as a response to the "repeated Israeli targeting of the Lebanese army," most recently manifested in an attack on November 17, 2024, which struck an army post in the town of Mari in the Hasbaya district of southern Lebanon. The attack resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to three others, with one soldier in critical condition. This incident has raised the death toll among the army ranks to 36 since October 8, 2023. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the complaint urges the member states of the Security Council to "condemn the repeated Israeli attacks on the army," labeling them as blatant violations of international law, the UN Charter, and international resolutions, notably Resolution 1701. This resolution is significant as the Lebanese army is a central component in its imp lementation, working to ensure sustainable security and stability in southern Lebanon. The army aims to extend the authority of the Lebanese state over all its territories and internationally recognized borders, in collaboration with UNIFIL forces. Lebanon emphasized that the "targeting of the army undermines international efforts to implement resolution 1701," highlighting the "urgent necessity" of securing and supporting the army to effectively carry out its tasks. This support is deemed crucial for enhancing security along the Lebanese borders.
