Nicosia: President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, on Wednesday paid an official visit to Cyprus, where he was received with full honors by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The visit included expanded bilateral talks, a joint press conference, and a symbolic tour of the Green Line in Nicosia.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, in his remarks, President Aoun underscored the deep historical ties between Lebanon and Cyprus, calling both countries 'safe havens for those seeking peace and freedom.' He emphasized the importance of fair peace through dialogue and the responsible pursuit of freedom and prosperity. 'What history and geography unite cannot be separated by numbers or calculations,' Aoun said, affirming Lebanon's enduring appreciation for Cyprus's steadfast support.
In turn, President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus's strategic commitment to Lebanon's stability and prosperity, stressing that Lebanon's peace is vital for the broader Mediterranean region and the EU. He announced that pound 1 billion in EU aid to Lebanon was in its final approval stage and praised Aoun's efforts to uphold UN Resolution 1701 and the November 2024 ceasefire agreement.
The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation in defense, energy, trade, and tourism. Cyprus pledged to support Lebanon's participation in an upcoming EU summit and reiterated its commitment to strengthening EU-Lebanon relations during its EU Council presidency in 2026.
Aoun concluded the visit by highlighting the symbolic and practical partnership between the two countries, reinforced by centuries of shared history and thousands of Lebanese living in Cyprus.
