AL-KHAZEN: IT IS LIKELY THAT WE WILL HEAR SERIOUS TALK ABOUT THE PRESIDENTIAL FIGURE, WHO MAY BE ELECTED UNLESS THERE ARE SURPRISES

Former Minister Wadih al-Khazen said in an issued statement on Sunday, “The presidential obstacle is not limited to the consensus of the Maronite parties only, but rather the agreement of all concerned, Muslims and Christians together…However, the understanding between the Maronite leaders on a president for the country will contribute directly and with a high percentage to ensuring the quorum for the election session and ending the presidential crisis.”

He continued, “It seems that after the last presidential election session, we are likely to hear serious talk about the president’s figure, who may be elected unless there are unpleasant surprises.”

Al-Khazen hoped that “those concerned would grasp the seriousness of the situation, and present courageously to a constructive dialogue that would lead to an agreement on naming the fourteenth president of the republic, and averting the danger of vacuum and vacancy out of respect for the position of the first presidency.”

He urged the deputies, as well as all officials, to “open horizons for domestic politics, after it was struck by stagnation and the lack of international confidence in our system.”

Al-Khazen concluded: “Let these pivotal days be a station for examining our consciences, and let us work together, not only to reduce the level of tension and hatred, but also to meet, avoid an abominable void, and seek to revive life in the veins of all state administrations.”
