Bethlehem: A Palestinian prisoner from Bethlehem, Muhammad Munir Musa, aged 37, died in Soroka Hospital, Israel, under circumstances that have raised serious concerns among Palestinian groups. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, in a joint statement issued today, reported that Musa’s death occurred on Friday and was communicated by the Civil Affairs Authority, which had been informed by the Israeli authorities.
According to Maan News Agency, Musa had been detained by the Israeli authorities since April 20, 2023, marking his first arrest. He was held at Ramon prison up until his death. Musa, a married father of three girls, reportedly did not suffer from any chronic health issues prior to his arrest, casting doubt on the cause and circumstances of his death. The two Palestinian organizations have cited “systematic crimes” such as torture, medical negligence, and other forms of maltreatment by the Israeli authorities as likely contributing factors to Musa’s death a
nd the deaths of 40 other prisoners and detainees since October 7.
The statement highlighted ongoing severe accusations against the Israeli administration, particularly targeting Ben Gvir, identified as a fascist minister, for his alleged direct involvement and public endorsement of such actions against Palestinian prisoners. These actions are said to be part of a broader “war of extermination,” with systematic crimes described as unprecedented in both intensity and frequency, aimed at the political extermination of prisoners.
Furthermore, the Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Prisoners’ Club have expressed grave concerns about the safety and well-being of over 10,100 prisoners and detainees, including hundreds from Gaza held in army camps, who are reportedly subjected to continuous severe violations. These claims come amidst what is described as a global inability to respond effectively to these alleged crimes.
The two organizations have called for international human rights bodies to intervene more ro
bustly and hold Israeli leaders accountable for what they describe as ongoing and historical crimes against Palestinian detainees, which they claim now threaten the broader spectrum of human rights globally.
With Musa’s death, the number of recognized martyrs from the Palestinian prisoner movement since 1967 has risen to 278, with a significant spike in deaths reported following recent escalations in the region.
