Brussels: The European Union has expressed grave concerns over reports that North Korea is deploying troops to Russia to support its military campaign in Ukraine, labeling the move a "hostile act" with potential repercussions for global stability. According to Kuwait News Agency, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a press release on Thursday condemning the reported deployment. Borrell emphasized that such an action by North Korea constitutes a "serious breach of international law," specifically violating the core tenets of the United Nations Charter. He further criticized Russia for exacerbating instability and escalating tensions both regionally and globally. Borrell highlighted the increasing military collaboration and arms transfers between North Korea and Russia, describing these developments as blatant violations of several UN Security Council resolutions. He urged North Korea to cease its support for what he termed Russia's "illegal war efforts" in Ukra ine. The High Representative expressed concerns that the growing ties between the two nations signal Russia's lack of commitment to achieving "a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace," instead portraying Moscow as desperate for military assistance, even from actors undermining global peace. The statement also touched upon Russia's attitude towards North Korea's nuclear ambitions. Borrell found it troubling that Russia appears to be neglecting its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and infringing upon multiple UN Security Council resolutions, some of which Russia had previously supported. This situation, Borrell noted, underscores the interconnectedness of European and Indo-Pacific security, reinforcing the EU's commitment to working with international partners on these challenges. Reports suggest that North Korea plans to send approximately 3,000 soldiers to Russia, as part of a larger contingent of 10,000 troops expected to be deployed by the end of the year.
