BEIRUT: The World Health Organization announced that the European Union is extending humanitarian aid to fortify Lebanon's beleaguered healthcare system, strained by ongoing emergencies. The EU, through its Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, has dispatched a shipment of 40 trauma and emergency surgery kits, which will facilitate 4,000 surgical procedures for traumatic injuries, according to a statement from the WHO office in Beirut. According to Kuwait News Agency, WHO is collaborating with the Lebanese Ministry of Health's Public Health Emergency Operations Center to ensure the effective distribution of these kits. The shipment aims to alleviate the burden on hospitals that are currently overwhelmed, operating at full capacity, and receiving an influx of patients with traumatic injuries on a daily basis. The assistance represents an extension of an ongoing project funded by ECHO. This initiative is designed to maintain healthcare services for Lebanon's most v ulnerable populations by bolstering access to hospitals for individuals requiring critical medical and surgical interventions during conflicts. The WHO emphasized that Lebanon's healthcare infrastructure has been under duress for several years. Recent developments in the last month have compounded these issues, with frontline hospitals and referral facilities seeing at least 300 patients each day. This surge is taxing both human resources and medical supplies. The crisis is exacerbated by continuous airstrikes conducted by Israeli forces since September 23rd, affecting multiple regions within Lebanon. These attacks have caused substantial human and material damage and have displaced hundreds of thousands of residents, further straining the country's healthcare resources.
