Green Mideast Initiative Gains Momentum with New Members and Structural Developments

RIYADH: The Ministerial Council of the Green Mideast Initiative has successfully laid down the foundational organizational structure necessary for the initiative's secretariat, while also establishing its internal policies and appointing a treasurer. This crucial development marks a significant step forward in the initiative's implementation phase. According to Kuwait News Agency, the first session of the Ministerial Council concluded with a strong affirmation of the council's dedication to enhancing regional cooperation in the battle against land degradation, desertification, and drought. This commitment also extends to addressing biodiversity loss and climate change, alongside mitigating their profound environmental, social, and economic impacts. The council expressed its gratitude towards the Saudi leadership for initiating this environmental endeavor, which was first announced during the initiative's inaugural summit in Riyadh in October 2021. The session saw the expansion of the initiative, welcoming 1 1 new countries as regional members. These nations are anticipated to play a crucial role in achieving the ambitious objectives set forth by the initiative. The council also extended an invitation to other non-regional countries to join as contributors, emphasizing their potential impact in providing necessary technical and financial support. In its final statement, the council highlighted the need for ongoing efforts by member states to set ambitious future targets and to develop national strategies for land rehabilitation and vegetation growth. It also underscored the importance of bolstering international multilateral efforts and the essential roles played by the private sector, financial institutions, and civil society in addressing global environmental challenges. Furthermore, the council praised the United Kingdom's recent decision to join the initiative as a non-regional member with observer status and acknowledged the UK's role in hosting the upcoming World Environment Day celebrations in Riyadh on June 5. The theme for the 2024 World Environment Day, "Our Earth, Our Future," was also endorsed, reflecting a shared global commitment to environmental sustainability. Looking forward, the Ministerial Council has shown keen interest in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, scheduled for December in Riyadh. This conference is expected to serve as a pivotal global platform for addressing the pressing issues of land degradation and drought. Additionally, acting Director General of the Environment Public Authority, Samira Al-Kandari, emphasized Kuwait's strong support for the Green Mideast Initiative from the sidelines of the session. She noted Kuwait's initial approval of the initiative and ongoing efforts to authorize its charter, highlighting the initiative's role in reducing carbon emissions and combating land degradation.
