Beirut: The Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), General Rodolph Haykal, recently concluded a visit to the United Kingdom, where he participated in the UK-hosted 'Dragon Group' meeting from August 4-5. He was accompanied by UK Defence Attach© to Lebanon, Lt Col Charlie Smith, highlighting the robust military partnership between Lebanon and the UK.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Dragon Group is a UK-led initiative that was launched in 2018 aboard HMS Dragon, aiming to bring together Chiefs of Defence from the Middle Eastern region. Originally consisting of nine nations, the group has expanded to encompass the region's broader security landscape. Lebanon's inclusion this year emphasizes its strategic importance and enduring partnership with the UK in fostering regional stability.
The ninth meeting was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, aligning with the renowned Military Tattoo. During the visit, General Haykal engaged with the UK Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, as well as Chiefs of Defence from across the Middle East. Their discussions centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation, regional security, and ongoing UK support for the LAF as the sole legitimate defender of Lebanon.
This visit reaffirms the UK's commitment to Lebanon's stability and sovereignty. Since 2009, the UK has provided over £161 million in support to Lebanon's security institutions, including £106 million in direct assistance to the LAF through training, equipment, and infrastructure.
Charge D'Affaires Victoria Dunne commented on the visit, stating that it reflects the strength of the defence partnership and the UK's continuous support for the Lebanese Armed Forces. She emphasized the UK's solidarity with Lebanon in its efforts to maintain peace, security, and sovereignty.
