UAE Advocates for Climate Action Committees in Parliaments to Address Natural Resource Challenges

Geneva: In a significant move toward enhancing global climate change policies, the United Arab Emirates has called for the establishment of specialized climate action committees within parliaments. This proposal was put forth during the meeting of the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, which was part of the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva. According to Emirates News Agency, Ahmed Mir Hashim Khoori, a member of the Federal National Council (FNC) Parliamentary Division Group, highlighted the pressing challenges that parliaments face concerning natural resources. These include the inability to formulate effective climate adaptation policies, insufficient funding for parliamentary initiatives, and persistent gender inequality. In response, the UAE Parliamentary Division has proposed the creation of internal committees dedicated to climate action. These committees would be tasked with developing evidence-based policies, fostering collaborations with scientific bodies for data collection, creating localized climate action plans, and establishing partnerships with international and non-governmental organizations to secure necessary funding and expertise for environmental projects. The discussions at the meeting also covered the role of parliamentarians in preventing conflicts over natural resources by promoting peace and developing preventive solutions. The ongoing 149th IPU Assembly, set to conclude on October 17, 2024, centers on the theme "Harnessing science, technology, and innovation (STI) for a more peaceful and sustainable future." This theme underscores the critical role of parliamentary dialogue in addressing global challenges through innovation and collaboration.
