Beirut: UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, expressing strong support for President Trump's initiative to halt hostilities between Hizballah and Israel. She emphasized the urgent need for a political solution aligned with UN Resolution 1701 to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Cooper highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict over the past six weeks, which has resulted in significant humanitarian challenges. More than a million people have been displaced, with widespread destruction and numerous civilian casualties, including children. The ceasefire provides an opportunity for those affected to return to their homes and begin rebuilding their lives.
Cooper urged all parties involved to honor the ceasefire and work towards a durable peace. She stressed that Hizballah should cease its attacks on Israel and disarm, while Israel must respect Lebanese sovereignty and cease its military operations. The Foreign Secretary reiterated the UK's commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, noting the country's £30 million contribution this year for essential aid such as medical supplies, shelter, and clean water.
In her statement, Cooper affirmed the UK's ongoing role in supporting those in need and ensuring the ceasefire leads to a lasting peace in the region.
