AL-HAWAT RECEIVES US AMBASSADOR: FOR ADOPTING POSITIVE NEUTRALITY IN LEBANON

MP Ziad al-Hawat received today at his Byblos office the United States Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, in the presence of Byblos Mayor Wissam Zaarour.

Talks during the visit touched on the general situation prevailing in the country.

Referring to the prominent Lebanese city of Jbeil, al-Hawat stressed that it provides ‘an example of cultural diversity and coexistence,’ adding that ‘despite all the difficult circumstances that Lebanon is witnessing, Jbeil is preparing to launch its tourism season with the approach of summertime.”

He noted that Byblos “can be an example for implementing expanded decentralization, as the political and economic renaissance it witnessed was the result of the non-exclusivity of decision-making and the integration and harmony among the work team that managed the city’s affairs.”

At the political level, al-Hawat underlined ‘the necessity of electing a president of the republic who possesses the characteristics of a strong president and plays a pivotal role in leading and sav
ing Lebanon.’

He also called for “the literal implementation of the Taif Accord and the removal of all illegal weapons,” considering that “some people’s adherence to the prevailing reality would push them to demand a change in the structure upon which Lebanon is based.’

The MP continued to emphasize the necessity of adopting ‘positive neutrality’ in Lebanon, considering that ‘our forceful involvement in the war in the south cannot end except by implementing international resolutions, especially 1701 and 1559.”

“Lebanon can no longer tolerate further economic and social collapse,” maintained al-Hawat.

He also touched on “Lebanon’s uniqueness and distinction in the region,” considering that “the Resistance axis project does not resemble us nor our culture, and the political battle we are waging is to preserve Lebanon’s cultural identity.”

The attendees later went on a Byblos tour following the meeting, where the American ambassador was briefed on the city’s landmarks and featured activities.

US senator calls to stop supplying weapons to Israel

WASHINGTON, US Democratic Senator Tim Kaine Saturday called on US administration to review the policy of sending weapons to the occupying entity 9Israel) due to the high toll of innocent civilian victims killed by the occupation forces in Gaza.

“Recent events have made plain that much more needs to be done to protect innocent life. This is particularly the case regarding the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The aid is needed to avert famine and disease. But despite constant pressure from the United States, other nations, and international organizations, the amount of aid allowed by Israel to enter Gaza has been painfully slow and dramatically inadequate,” the senator added.

He pointed out that “The Israeli strike on a World Central Kitchen humanitarian aid convoy this week crystallizes the frustration that is at a boiling point. The killing of seven volunteers exemplifies that current conditions make it nearly impossible for NGOs and international organizations to safely and swiftly deliver humanitaria
n aid to suffering people. The attack raises questions about whether the U.S. can safely partner with these groups to deliver aid from a marine pier into Gaza. U.S. troops involved in such a mission will likely include Virginians. They shouldn’t be in harm’s way as they provide life-sustaining aid, but the unfolding events in the region show that even a humanitarian aid mission carries real danger.” In addition “I applaud President Biden for successfully urging Prime Minister Netanyahu to open another border crossing from Israel to allow robust delivery of humanitarian aid. But this was an obvious solution that should have happened months ago.” It follows a similar pattern of lengthy delay before Israel allowed the Kerem Shalom crossing to be used to provide aid to hundreds of thousands of people who had been instructed to move into Southern Gaza. “If Israel had allowed existing border crossings to be used to allow life-sustaining aid to reach Gaza, there would be no need for dangerous air-drops or complicate
d plans for building marine piers,” he noted.

The United States has time and again stood with Israel as a friend, partner and ally. And no one has been as steadfast a partner as President Biden. But as the President emphasized in his phone call with Prime Minister Netanyahu yesterday, the current approach is not working, said senator.

“There is need for immediate progress on a deal to free the hostages and establish a significant ceasefire in which humanitarian aid can flow to suffering people without fear of military attack. Such a deal will de-escalate the widening regional tensions and open up room for a much-needed and long-delayed discussion about Palestinian autonomy. But even as we exert all energy to find such a path forward, I urge the Administration to use every tool at its disposal to ensure that sufficient aid reaches Gaza. It is in Israel’s immediate and long-term interest to not block such efforts but to cooperate with them,” he noted.

However, the United States should join in the call for an
independent and international investigation into Monday’s strike on World Central Kitchen volunteers, in which an American was killed.

“Finally, I renew my request that the Biden Administration prioritize the transfer of defensive weapons in all arms sales to Israel while withholding bombs and other offensive weapons that can kill and wound civilians and humanitarian aid workers. Israel must have the capacity to defend itself against those-like Hamas-who would annihilate it. But more offensive weapons delivered at this moment will only further widen suffering in Israel, Gaza and the region,” added senator.

Defeat ISIS Mission in Iraq and Syria for January through March 2024

WASHINGTON, United States Central Command, along with “our Defeat ISIS partners,” Iraqi Security Forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces, conducted 94 Defeat ISIS Missions resulting in 18 ISIS operatives killed and 63 detained from January through March, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) declared in a statement.

In Iraq, 66 partnered operations resulted in 11 ISIS operatives killed and 36 ISIS operatives detained. In Syria, 28 partnered operations resulted in seven ISIS operatives killed and 27 ISIS operatives detained.

The continued pursuit of the approximately 2,500 ISIS fighters at large across Iraq and Syria is a critical component to the enduring defeat of ISIS.

Equally vital are the ongoing international efforts to repatriate more than 9,000 ISIS detainees in detention facilities in Syria, and the repatriation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of more than 45,000 individuals and families from the Al Hol and Al Roj camps.

CENTCOM supports United States efforts to maintain sustained pressure to addres
s the persistent ISIS threat.

“We are committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS because of the threat they pose both regionally and globally. We continue to focus our efforts on specifically targeting those members of ISIS who are seeking to conduct external operations outside of Iraq and Syria and those ISIS members attempting to break out ISIS members in detention in an attempt to reconstitute their forces,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command. “Defeating this threat requires continued pressure from our partners and the Coalition.”
