ICBA Highlights Advances in Sustainable Agriculture on World Food Day

Dubai: On World Food Day, the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) emphasized its pivotal role in enhancing global food security and advancing sustainable agriculture, particularly in saline and arid environments. ICBA's innovative research and development activities are geared towards improving agricultural productivity and managing natural resources under challenging conditions. According to Emirates News Agency, ICBA's efforts are centered around several key research themes including natural resource management in arid and saline environments, climate change adaptation, crop improvement, and sustainable production, alongside integrated agri-aquaculture systems. These areas form the backbone of ICBA's strategy to promote sustainable agricultural practices across diverse ecosystems globally. ICBA has successfully introduced 24 technologies and crops in about 30 countries, showcasing its commitment to transforming agricultural practices to suit harsh environments. Additionally, the organiza tion's gene bank in Dubai is noted for its extensive collection of over 17,000 accessions from roughly 325 plant species, making it one of the largest of its kind globally. This gene bank not only supports worldwide agricultural research and capacity building but also plays a crucial role in preserving plant diversity in the UAE, focusing on local species conservation for future sustainability efforts. Moreover, ICBA has made significant strides in capacity development, training over 19,000 participants through various programs that include collaborative research, technical training, and internships. These initiatives are designed to equip new generations of scientists and agricultural professionals with the necessary tools to address the challenges posed by salinity and arid climate conditions. In its pursuit to empower underrepresented groups, ICBA has launched several initiatives targeting youth and women. The Arab Women Leaders in Agriculture (AWLA) and the Women Alliance for Climate Action in Agricultu re (WACAA) focus on enhancing the role of women in agriculture, promoting climate-smart practices. Likewise, the ICBA Youth Engagement Society (ICBA YES) and the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) UAE 2023 are platforms encouraging youth participation in food security and sustainable development discussions. Collaborating with over 70 organizations across 50 countries, ICBA continues to address vital global challenges of food, water, and nutrition security. Its engagement in international forums on food security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) further allows ICBA to share insights and collaborate on developing innovative solutions tailored to regional needs. ICBA also offers consultancy services and technology testing platforms to companies aiming to adapt their agricultural products for arid and saline environments, ensuring that these innovations are both effective and appropriate for broad application. Looking forward, ICBA's 2034 strategic framework aims to position the center as a global hu b for agricultural data intelligence in challenging environments, continuing its focus on women's empowerment, biodiversity conservation, and resilient agricultural systems. On World Food Day, ICBA reaffirms its commitment to building sustainable food systems and supporting communities most impacted by food insecurity and climate change.
