Beirut: The Kataeb Party's Political Bureau held its regular weekly meeting under the leadership of Party President Samy Gemayel to discuss recent political and security developments in Lebanon. In their post-meeting statement, the Bureau addressed several key issues affecting the nation.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Bureau acknowledged the first anniversary of President Joseph Aoun's election, praising efforts to restore Lebanon's sovereignty through ongoing negotiations and essential State reforms. They urged the President to continue enforcing State authority throughout Lebanon. The Bureau expressed satisfaction with the completion of the first phase of the disarmament plan south of the Litani River and called for the rapid initiation of the second phase north of the river. This is deemed crucial for the security and peace of southern Lebanon and the nation as a whole. The Bureau emphasized that disarming armed groups operating outside the law is a constitutional duty and a national necessity, not influenced by political or sectarian factors.
The Bureau also highlighted concerns regarding the current electoral law, which the government views as unenforceable. They called on the Speaker of Parliament to hold a session to amend the law, ensuring Lebanese expatriates can vote for all 128 members of parliament from abroad. This reform aims to uphold constitutional equality and enhance citizen engagement in Lebanon's political processes.
Further, the Bureau reiterated its commitment to a respectful and equal relationship with Syria, based on non-interference. They welcomed the cooperation between Lebanese and Syrian Ministries of Justice on the issue of Syrian detainees in Lebanon. The Bureau stressed that Lebanon should not be a base for interference in Syrian affairs and urged security agencies to monitor activities that could destabilize either country.
