President Aoun Seeks EU Support for Lebanon-Israel Agreement Implementation

Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, emphasized Lebanon's need for support from European Union countries during a meeting with Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, at Baabda Palace. He highlighted the significance of the Nov 27 agreement, which calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories occupied during the last conflict in the south.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun also addressed the agreement's clause concerning the release of Lebanese detainees held in Israel, which has a February 18 deadline. He reiterated Lebanon's commitment to implementing Resolution 1701 and called on Israel to respect it as well.

President Aoun expressed gratitude to Minister Fajon for Slovenia's support of Lebanon in the Security Council during its non-permanent membership, which extends until the end of the year. He noted that the priority after forming the new Lebanese government would be to rebuild areas destroyed by the recent war, particularly in southern Lebanon. He welcomed and appreciated the support from the European Union.

The discussions also covered ways to enhance bilateral relations and discussed the current regional situation amidst rapid developments. The dialogue highlighted common challenges faced by Middle Eastern and European countries.

The meeting included Slovenian Ambassador to Lebanon Gorazd Renceglj and a Slovenian delegation, while the Lebanese side featured Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Dr. Abdullah Bou Habib, Director-General of the Presidency of the Republic Dr. Antoine Choucair, Advisors Jean Murad and Michel de Charadouvian, and Head of the Presidency's Press Office Rafic Chalala. Separately, President Aoun also met with former Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji.
