Recursion Adds New Chemical Entity Targeting Fibrotic Diseases to Late Discovery Pipeline

Potential First-in-Class Novel Molecule with Novel Target In-Licensed from Collaboration with Bayer

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 04, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Recursion (NASDAQ: RXRX), a leading clinical stage TechBio company decoding biology to industrialize drug discovery, today announced it has signed an agreement with Bayer AG to in-license a new chemical entity that emerged from the companies’ fibrosis research collaboration. The compound represents a novel approach to treating fibrotic diseases with compelling early data suggesting the potential to reverse disease-related fibrotic processes, including immuno-mesenchymal dysfunction.

“Since initiating our research collaboration with Bayer in 2020, we have worked diligently to apply the power of the Recursion OS to identify and advance potential candidates in challenging areas of disease biology,” said Chris Gibson, Ph.D., Co-founder and CEO of Recursion. “We are excited to bring this asset into our internal pipeline and accelerate the compelling science behind this program while our research collaboration with Bayer focuses on precision oncology.”

Recursion applied phenotypic screening of human cells to identify small molecules that reverse the phenotypic features of disease-state fibrocyte cells into those of healthy-state cells. Leveraging the power of Recursion’s Maps of Biology and Chemistry revealed a relationship between small molecule hits and a novel target that could impact fibrotic diseases. The most promising small molecule hits were confirmed as potent inhibitors of this novel target in validation experiments, and lead optimization studies are currently ongoing.

Fibrotic diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with high unmet need for patients. One of the biggest challenges in the treatment of fibrotic diseases is the underlying complex biology and the associated difficulty in discovering disease-modifying drug targets. Recursion’s technology is uniquely suited to accelerate discoveries in these and other complex areas of disease biology.

FM meets with US Senators in Cairo

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will meet on Thursday with U.S. Senator for Maryland Chris Van Hollen and Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley, the members of the US Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

On January 3, the Egyptian minister received an 8-member delegation from the US Senate and House of Representatives, headed by Senator Joni Ernst, who is visiting Egypt as part of a regional tour.

Shoukry added that reaching an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and putting an end to the violence of Israeli settlers are inevitable priorities.

On the dangers of expanding the conflict in the region, especially with the increasing severity and intensity of skirmishes on the Lebanese scene and in Iraq and Syria, the Egyptian side stressed that security of maritime navigation in the Red Sea is necessary for the smooth and secure movement of global trade.

Members of the US delegation praised the bilateral relations and strategic partnership between the two countries, highlighting their keenness to consult and cooperate with Egypt regarding international and regional issues.

They also expressed their full appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, and its
role in securing the departure of foreign nationals, as well as facilitating prisoner release deals.

The minister of foreign affairs was keen to answer the American delegation’s inquiries regarding Egypt’s vision for a future solution to the Palestinian issue, the country’s position towards dealing with the calls of displacing Palestinians outside their lands, and the available alternatives to defuse the current crisis in the Middle East, Abu Zeid concluded.

Egypt’s net international reserves end 2023 with increase of $4.6B, CBE

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) revealed on Thursday 4/1/2024 the latest date on the country’s net international reserves (NIR), sharing a $4.6 billion increase during the final month of 2023.

In December 2023, the CBE recorded its NIR at $35.219 billion, compared to $35.173 billion at the end of November.

Egypt continues to report positive inflows to its foreign reserves, with increases in October which closed the month with $35.1 billion, and in September when it reported $34.97 billion.

The country’s foreign reserves consist of a varied basket of foreign currencies such as the U.S. dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, and Chinese yuan. The NIR is used by the CBE to ensure basic commodities, and pay installments and interests on foreign debts.

As part of its efforts to boost its foreign reserves, Egypt remains in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to begin reviews for its $3 billion loan program after two delayed reviews.

The IMF’s Director of the Middle East and Central
Asia department at the IMF, Jihad Azour, recently revealed that the fund and Egypt are resuming negotiations within the coming weeks.

The state has committed to an ambitious strategy to attract a substantial $191 billion in foreign investments to boost the country’s foreign reserves by 2026 as it struggles with a hard currency shortage.

Egypt is looking towards several revenue streams to boost its reserves, including from the Suez Canal Economic Zone which is expected to bring in around $3.9 billion and LE 70 billion in FY2023/2024 from its privatization/IPO program. The program has already brought in $5.6 billion from the complete or partial shares in 14 state-owned companies.
