Egypt and Saudi Arabia Advocate for Lasting Peace and Improved Regional Stability

CAIRO: Egypt and Saudi Arabia have called for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of blockades, while emphasizing the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law. This appeal came during a joint statement issued at the culmination of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman's visit to Egypt, where both nations condemned the ongoing Israeli actions in Jerusalem and stressed the importance of preserving the historical and legal status of the holy city. According to Kuwait News Agency, the joint statement also underscored the importance of resolving the Palestinian issue comprehensively and justly, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This vision aligns with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant UN resolutions. The statement also appreciated Saudi Arabia's efforts in hosting a significant Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh, which unified the stance of Arab and Islamic countries regarding Pa lestine. The discussions further highlighted Egypt's critical role in mediating ceasefire efforts and coordinating humanitarian aid since the onset of the conflict in Gaza. The statement also welcomed the formation of an international coalition, in partnership with the European Union and Norway, to advocate for the two-state solution and invited more nations to join this initiative. On broader regional issues, the statement addressed concerns over the stability and sovereignty of Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, and Somalia, emphasizing the importance of security in the Red Sea region and its significance for global trade and peace. Additionally, the statement marked the creation of the "Saudi-Egyptian High Coordination Council," co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which aims to boost bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors. The economic ties between the two nations were also a focal point, with trade reaching approximately USD 8.4 bi llion in the first half of 2024, a 41% increase from the previous year.
